celebrate 4/20 for some people. we're going to get lots of sunshine and we'll check out more events going on around the bay area and forecast. mike, you're saying it's a true friday start to your commute. >> you reminded me that the hail was on monday. my gosh, yes, what a week you've had. you've had a good week as far as the drive goes or end to the week. friday a lighter commute and that's what we're seeing, folks picking up construction i forgot to remind you 880 southbound is completely clear. overnight there was a closure at 23rd. that was a great green chicklets all around the bay. the speed limit berkeley curve coming off 580 and the maze, a nice drive towards the bay bridge. fremont to the south bay with headlights, you're at speed throughout silicon valley. back to you. >> 5:00 right now. in just hours thousands of teens across the country and here in the bay area will walk out of class. that's a story that has a lot of question from people. we're talking about school shootings, it's exactly 19 years since the columbine massacre and

students who we not ev alive when that happened are ting a stand. bo redell is live in san jose. bob, how are local teens making their voices heard this morning? >> marcus, there are more than 2600 of these walkouts planned nationwide for later this morning. we've been able to confirm 36 here in the bay area including the one here in south san jose. it will be at 10:00 this morning that students will walk out of class, possibly off campus to pause for 13 seconds, one seconds for each of the victims of the columbine shooting that took place in littleton colorado 19 years ago today. you'll recall the shooters and that massacre were two teenage classmates who committed suicide after police arrived. most of the students participating today weren't alive for columbine but they do remember newtown and most recently parkland where 17 people were shot and killed is a school in florida this past february. the walkout is designed to pressure lawmakers to past

stricter gun control laws. at some schools there will be a voter registration drive so students who are 16 and 17 years of age can preregister so when they turn 18 they can elect lawmakers who enact touch ir restrictions. this is the third mass walkout since parkland. many of the school districts do support the student's right to free speech and expression and some are not okay with the students skipping class or going off campus. for example, san francisco unified let us know students who walk out wll receive an unexcused absence with a notification to mom anddad. at dublin in the east bay, students can receive detention, that's according to the east bay times. the paper also reports morgan hill is encouraging students to attend a student led town hall at school instead of walking off campus. we will have live coverage at 10:00 a.m. we'll have a number of crews at the different walkouts throughout the bay area. live at 10:00 this morning. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> this morning we will have

crews across the bay area to check off this -- we'll break into regular programming at 10:00 this morning as those students began to walk out. you can stay updated through the digital platforms 24/7. developing news out of washington, congress will get their first look at explosive memos just released as we look live at the capitol. we have a redacted version of those memos just released by the justice department that detail fbi director jamtz comey's encounters with president trump. tracie potts is live in washington. you've had a little time to sift through it this morning. what do you think the interesting points are? >> reporter: so the 15 pages of memo seem to reveal an early trump white house that was very focused on michael flynn and whether or not he seemed to be a ncern. his judgment seemed to be a concern as the president put it to thi whouse. 15 pages here, a lot of it already out in the public but there are some things that we

are learning new in these memos that were only released because of a threat of a subpoena to the justice department. >> new overnight from the comey memos, president trump claiming former national security adviser michael flynn had serious judgment issues and former chief of staff reince priebus asking if flynn was under surveillance. >> and you did give him an answer? >> correct. >> was it improper for you to tell him directly in that moment? >> i didn't think so. i hesitated. >> comey began the memos after a trump tower meeting to brief the president elect on russian claims involving prostitutes. >> he might not tell the truth about those if it ever became an issue. i need aid written record. >> reporter: he says the issue came up again in the oval office. >> he told you that he had a personal conversation with president putin about hookers? yes. >> that comey leaked classified

information. three republican committee chairs point outcomy never says he felt obstructed or threatened. the top democrat on oversight say they proved president trump interfered in a blatant effort to deny justice. nbc news, washington. 5:05. this news just in, passengers on the southwest flight that have that engine explosion are getting checks for $5,000 from southwest airlines. that is coming down in the last few minutes. you will remember a woman died in that explosion and the plane made an emergency landing in philadelphia. no one else was seriously hurt. 5:05. wells fargo facing a big fine. the san francisco based bank expected to be fined as much as a billion dollars today by the fed. it is tied to auto lending mortgages not the sales practices scandal. this is the biggest fine ever imposed and comes as no surprise. wells fargo executives announced

last week it was negotiations with the government to settle over charges. the judge at the center of a south bay recall effort and high profile ruling you may have formed your on opinion on is now breaking his silence. opponents of judge persky say he handed down a light sentence to brock turner who sexually assaulted a woman outside a fraternity party on campus. he spoke exclusively with the mercury news and calls the recall effort misplaced frustration with the criminal justice system. he believes the legal system must take sexual assault and domestic violence victims more seriously and recall threats can only shake public confidence in the judiciary. new details from fremont investigators on a deadly police shooting two weeks ago. police will not release that body cam are video. earlier this month officers shot and killed 18-year-old who was

wanted on several wants. he was in the passenger side and ran off and officers fired at him after he started firing first. students at two peninsula schools will head back to class today. this is after a frightening encounter yesterday. take a look there. you can see the mountain lion was spotted shelter in place for abbott and hillsdale school. neighbors rushed inside after reports of cougar on the prowl. if you think you've actually seen a lot of mountain lions lately, you're not wrong about that. experts say a lot of deer in the area main reason why they seem to have more sightings. it should be noted that mountain lions rarely approach or attack humans. we know how scary earthquakes can be, even the small ones. san francisco is now expanding an emergency training program. it is offering in all eleven districts.

i'll have a look at the day planner and temperature trend for fremont coming up. mike, you said there's another weird slow spot popping up? >> early in the morning there's not a lot besides the green we see especially on a friday. we notice when things are orange or red. right here, 680 northbound shows a little slowdown earlier. it was westbound 84 which cleared over at the dumbarton bridge. over here, it's already gone from red to orange. there may have been enough to caused by just one slower truck. we'll track that and let you know if any other incidents are reported from chp, gilroy, morgan hill, a little slowing shows up south 17, right around the summit and again that may be one slower vehicle. we'll track for any other incidents and check the monterey reports. san mateo bridge does move smoothly but we have a solid on the high rise, we'll let you know if any lanes are blocked. we'll track it closely. back to you. >> coming up next, 5:09, pushing

following disappointing earnings by a major supplier in asia. investors are fretting over rising interest rates and oil prices the dow closing falling 83 points to 24,664 and nasdaq 57 to 7 t. 238. at&t plans to launch a skinny bundle of tv channels without sports for $15 a month. that's one of the lowest prices available for a nationwide streaming plan. the service called at and txts watch would be free for at&t wire lgs customers and no details on a launch date or which channels will be included in that. netflix is considering a plan to get movies on the big screen buying its own theaters. netflix was in talk to buy landmark theaters chain but back out due to the cost. netflix has more subscribers than amazon or hulu but yet to rn respect from theater chains. owning a theater would make it easier for netflix to qualify

mattered? >> carson for his last name. >> learned things. >> yes, we do. let's learn about this weekend forecast. it is looking so good. we're in for some sunshine. now you head out this morning it's not as cool as yesterday but still a chilly start. taking a live look outside in san jose, all clear skies and temperature trend for evergreen will be at 57 degrees at 9:00 and some mid-70s later today and normally we're up to 70 degrees but we're going above and bond that, not only today but the next few days. the 7-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen showing low 80s heading even into next week for some of those interior valleys and ukia santa rosa, high of 74 and also 74 in palo alto. anty of course up to 78 degrees. you may be thinking let's go to the beach. today it's going to be cool along the coastline and half moon bay is going to stay in the 50s all day long.

so you have to wait a couple more days before it warms up along the coast. for napa valley, it's already going to be warming up there for today into the mid-70s but then we're loing at 80 degree temperatures for saturday and sunday. and all of us comcast employees and nbc employees will be volunteering tomorrow and you may have a volunteering event too because a lot of people are getting out there and getting active and their temperatures are going to be in the upper 50s during the morning. i think a lot of the work we're doing on the playground should be done early before the temperatures warm up. let me know what you're doing this weekend. i'm @ kari hall weather and weekend forecast is coming up in 20 minutes. we're looking at highs in the low 70s for san francisco tomorrow. and it does stay comfortable throughout this forecast while inland areas will be warming up, time to get the air conditioning cranked up and tuned up or whatever you need to do to make sure it's working for the next

several days. mike, you're double checking what's happening at the san mateo bridge. >> there was a disabled vehicle reported on the high rise over there. you can kind of see the lights there. that's always a concern, any time anything happens mid-span of our bridges, westbound as we maintain a smooth drive, has disappeared seconds ago, a good drive and i'll clear that icon, no worries westbound heading over to the peninsula, westbound across the dumbarton, we'll be more crowded and even on a friday, late slowing about 9:00, really bogs down between 8:00 and 9:00, really tough drive getting towards palo alto and menlo park. a smooth drive and little bit of slowing we saw on 680 still right around heading towards mission boulevard now. again, it is probably just a couple of slower moving vehicles through the vehicle. a live look shows san jose moves nicely northbound. that's why we have the green chicklets throughout the san jose area and fremont to the south bay, no problem. north heading towards the san

their go-to for fun? or when mom needs a break? this morning - a new study from the bay area - says tech how often are your kids online? this morning a new study from the bay area says tech companies are illegally handling children's data. researchers found more than 3,000 kid oriented droid apps that collect and sell yr kid's data to advertisers. as experts will tell you, there is a federal law that makes it illegal to do that with anyone under the age of 13. the normal way of doing business on the internet is that you are tracked and advertised

and they try to learn as much as they can about you as possible, children are not allowed to be treated that way. >> so what's a parent to do? you can check the apps on your kids devices and experts such a specific website where can do your research and checkup on any privacy problems. it's called app census and just posting the link on my social media platforms. you can find that on twitter. a night to remember, a group of high school and college students got to know each other a little bit better through soccer. this was for the soccer without borders event which was hosted by cal state east bay. college students came together to learn more from a team of high schoolers who are made up of immigrants and refugees. also gave high schoolers a chance to learn more about college. >> like learned that i can do that too. they helped give me the confidence in myself to do it too. >> something to smile about. >> organizers say it's all about

legal this time. >> good morning to you, marcus, i want to show you, this is an unsanctioned event by the city but it's the annual 4/20 celebration and city officials are expecting from 12,000 to 15,000 people to show up for this celebration. we're starting to see some organizers make their way to golden gate park for this event. as i mentioned this is the first 4:20 following the legalization of recreational marijuana. organizers are preparing and police are preparing for good crowds. when it comes to the specific area they'll have the area fenced off and there will be private security on site as usual. but chp says they are going to have a heavy presence here with additional units not only -- also afterwards in the area. we talked to chp considering this is the 4/20 celebration since the legalization of recational marijuana. >> it's a unique one, first time

>> 5:35 now and vallejo families may have difficult conversation with their kids today after a fourth grade teacher at glenn cove elementary school was arrested. police say he was trying to contact a minor for sex. today 36-year-old andrew lund will be formally charged. police arrested him yesterday accusing him of trying to contact a minor for sex. lund didn't know it at the time but he was actually talking with an undercover investigator and police say there could be more victims. >> east bay school on edge. a cal high student arrested for planning an attack in the year 2021. this would be his senior year, san ramon say the student is a freshman right now and investigators are crediting another student who notified police. the district leaders say this is a good reminder, if you see something or know something, say something. the nation will say good-bye to former first lady barbara

bush. she will lay in repose today. brand-new video into our newsroom within the last 20 minutes shows a hearse arriving at saint martin's episcopal church. you can see the first lady arriving there. this is in houston. the bush family have been members of the church for decades. average people will have a chance to pay respects all day. the former first lady died at her houston home earlier this week. new video at 5:37 of that terrifying emergency landing this week involving a southwest plane. passenger named tara root took out her cell phone when the oxygen masks were deployed. they have pinpointed metal fatigue in the fan blade. meanwhile we have learned that a public memorial is planned this sunday for the mother of two who died nearly being suckedout hat plane. the service will take place at the university ofegmillions. details on that funeral are not known. the veterans home of

california now has a new leader. frederick just is taking over. the home dismissed the previous administrator last year. the video that you're seeing here is from last month when the facility made national headlines. a former soldier took three workers hostage killing them and then himself. they had been trying to help him with ptsd. it had to be a tough night for both teams in last night's warriors playoff game against san antonio. but that game did go on. spurs head coach greg pop vich was not there after the death of his wife erin. the warriors were in control most of the night winning 110-97. kevin durant had a team high of 26 points and did tweak his ankle late in the game right there. yeah. but he says it's okay. good news there. the dubs have three games to none lead with game four on

sunday. good news for your commute at 5:38 as it is looking kind of mild out there, westbound traffic right now there. tonight eastbound drivers will get another option when traveling on the richmond/san rafael bridge. a third lane will open up later this afternoon during the rush hour commute. as you can see, you women see a right lane open sign on the bridge's marin county side. 20 sets of overhead green arrows will guide you if you're driving through the area. caltrans says the lane will open between 2:00 in the afternoon and 7:00 in the evening. that women hopefully make it easier from the north bay. let me show you, here's the richmond/san rafael bridge. we're talk being this direction in the afternoon and evenings. we normally show you the toll plaza going the opposite direction because that is your commute. the smooth drive and only backup is the commute at the lower bridge, the bay bridge westbound. metering lights are on and backup at the toll plaza, moving

forecast, as well for the northern california cherry blossom festival, perfect for both saturday and sunday. think the temperature trend will be about the same, just mostly sunny skies and up to 70 degrees if you're parking up the car and heading down to coachella for the weekend, we've had high winds that have closed some of the festival grounds but hopefully today the winds will calm done and look how hot it's going to be tomorrow. make sure you're prepared for both the cold temperatures and mid-90s throughout the day. then if you're also packing up the car heading over towards squaw valley and sierra, we have some warm weather this weekend and i think you better make plans soon to get there if you want to see some snow. because we continue on with temperatures like this in the 60s and 50s over the next several days. then going to santa barbara for the weekend, beautiful weather for heading to the beach and getting some sunshine. comfortable too, 70 degrees. as we celebrate earth day, muir

charges including assault and vandalism and now he's speaking out from his jail cell. >> i'm sorry -- >> police are not releasing debouils a what led to that arrest but a us they are the vi. they say clark rented a room in their home and started behaving ee receiptic rattically, reportedly threatened them and destroyed their home while they were away. this is video of him at the city council meeting. the couple filed a restraining order against him and say his mental health changed after the death of his brother stephon clark shot and killed by sacramento police last month. we're learning new details this morning on the financial hit to the city of sacramento after those protests following that deadly police shooting. the chp alone is clocking thousands of hours of overtime and those costs are approaching $800,000. taxpayers will be on the hook to cover those costs. missing a class won't mean jail time. this comes from a new ruling

film star. she claims she was given $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with donald trump more than a decade ago. she wants to have the deal declared invalid. attorneys for president trump want a 90 day hold while federal prosecutors in new york look into the payment of daniels. president trump denies the sexual encounter and says he was not aware of any payment. kari mentioned the forecast for coachella, the winds are causing a lot of problems for thousands of music fans. right now the festival camp grounds are not open because of those high winds. so guess where the festival goers are hanging out? >> where? >> walmart parking lot. not the same thing as coachella. winds are expected to die down today. >> from a parking lot to doing something with a lot of people and probably really the perfect weekend to get out and do this and give back.

here's a live look on your friday morning start with some mostly clear skies and i've been watching light patchy fog but this not causing any major issues. 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, the livermore schoolday forecast it's going to be a very chilly start. only low 40s there and then reaching in the low 70s by the time you pick them up from school, it's going to be gorgeous out there with mid-70s and oakland up to 70 degree and 76 in napa and san francisco at 64 degrees. as you're getting dressed this morning because it is so cool, even though you know it's going to be a beautiful day, and short sleeves for the afternoon. we just talked about this and comcast cares day. look for green t-shirts and i know a lot of people will be doing litter pickup and beach cleanup. in san jose we're going to be in the upper 50s during the morning but it does warm up quickly. i think you should probably get a lot of stuff done early. and then if you don't have any
